configure: avoid setting variables as empty strings
Recent patch converted our logic to use test -n and test -z. An emptry string variable (empty_str="") return true for both thus making the check unreliable. Fix this by correctly setting the variable when applicable. Signed-off-by: Emil Velikov <emil.l.velikov@gmail.com>
